Doggone Funny

This blog post has nothing to do with Almost Heaven Saunas, but has everything to do with a shameful act of self-promotion.  I have always harbored a secret dream of writing a book, and a disfunctional relationship with my dog a couple of years back proved the incentive to do so.  I wrote the book and sold all of four or five hundred copies, many to myself.  Still, I fulfilled my dream and vented my dog-frustrations in the process, and so it was worth it.  Regardless of whether you like dogs or not, as long as you have a sense of humor you may find this book enjoyable.  I would like to think that even a light-hearted PETA-person will appreciate the humor!  So, please visit www.masonorme.com and order your copy today… and let me know what you think!

Dishwasher Disfunction

April 18th, 2010

While this blog post admittedly has NOTHING to do with saunas, it is nevertheless a matter of great importance.  Besides, once and awhile a man simply needs to vent, and what better way to do it than through a blog post.

As I loaded the dishwasher the other day, I found myself rearranging dishes that had already been put in place.   Soon I was reloading the entire dishwasher, and that age-old question came to mind: “Why do husbands load dishwashers so much better than wives?”  It is a good question, since it defies logic as to why women have such a hard time with this seemingly simple task.

When my wife loads the dishwasher, not only is the capacity underutilized, the method of loading prevents any meaningful cleaning of said dishes.  Wives will place glasses and bowls upside down on the lower rack, preventing any water from reaching the upper rack.  In addition, cups will be placed on their side on the upper rack, and while this certainly cleans the outside of the cup, it does little for the inside.  The favored technique is placing the cookie sheet horizontally on top of everything on the top shelf.

In terms of organizational skills, wives reign supreme in the areas of cupboards, closets, drawers and vanities.  Why then, are husbands so much better at loading dishwashers?  I suspect it has something to do with a man’s capacity for technical efficiency.  We all know that in the areas of basements, garages, toolboxes and mini-vans, men are hands down the organizational leaders.

A man needs to know where his tools and equipment are in order to more quickly get the job done, allowing more time for golf, naps or in my case, taking a sauna.   Every family has seen how effectively the dad can pack the back of the van for vacation.  It’s the equivalent of putting 5 lbs of… well, you know the analogy.  The same skill that is required to pack a mini-van for vacation is needed to get the best use of space out of a dishwasher.  I’ll wager that I could get every dish we own into our dishwasher and still get the door closed.  We’d only be running the dishwasher once, maybe twice per week at most.

I must confess, however, that my repeated admonitions have not had their desired effect.  My wife seems to agree that I have superior dishwasher organization skills and has named me chief dishwasher-loader.  How did that happen?  Husbands, take note of the rule of unintended consequences that can occur when you flaunt your superior skills!
