Since Almost Heaven Saunas are made in the cooperage tradition, there are very few fasteners used in assembly of our saunas.  In the few instances where fasteners are required, we use only high- quality stainless steel fasteners, including stainless steel hinges, bands and screws.

We have just switched from Phillips head screws to Torque head screws, and this is a nice enhancement to our products.  The torque screw is much easier to use and will not “strip” while driving the screw with a power driver as Phillips head screws are prone to do.  And, each Almost Heaven Sauna kit has a torque-head bit included for your convenience!

Wood-Burning Options

While winter is still a ways off, some wanting to purchase of an Almost Heaven Sauna may want to consider a wood-burning sauna stove.  The Wood Burning Stove is a nice option for those wanting a truly natural and traditional sauna experience.  Plus, nothing is more charming than a Barrel Sauna with smoke coming out of the chimney with snow falling all around!

The wood-burning feature substitutes a wood stove specially designed for sauna use in place of the standard electric unit.  It allows the sauna to be used in places where there is not access to electric, such as a remote vacation cabin or in situations where the sauna is placed far from the house.

West Virginia Facts #2

Here, then, are some West Virginia facts:

  • The New River Gorge Bridge near Fayetteville is the second highest steel arch bridge in the United States. The bridge is also the longest steel arch bridge (1,700 feet) in the world. Every October on Bridge Day, the road is closed and individuals parachute and bungee cord jump 876 feet off the bridge. Its West Virginia’s largest single day event and attracts about 100,000 people each year.
     
  • The first major land battle fought between Union and Confederate soldiers in the Civil War was the Battle of Philippi on June 3, 1861.
     
  • One of the nation’s oldest and largest Indian burial grounds is located in Moundsville. Its 69 feet high, 900 feet in circumference, and 50 feet high. An inscribed stone was removed from the vault and is on display at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.
     
  • West Virginia’s nickname is the Mountain State and its motto is “Mountaineers Are Always Free.”
     
  • Some famous individuals from West Virginia include: Pearl Buck (author), Peter Marshall (television host), Chuck Yeager (test pilot /Air Force General), Don Knotts (actor), Mary Lou Retton (Olympic gold medallist for gymnastics), and Kathy Mattea (country music singer).
     
  • Nearly 75% of West Virginia is covered by forests.
     
  • West Virginia covers about 24,000 square miles and has a population of about 1.8 million.
     
  • 15% of the nation’s total coal production comes from West Virginia.
     
  • According to the crime index for 1997, West Virginia had the lowest crime rate in the country.
     
  • West Virginia’s Memorial Tunnel was the first in the nation to be monitored by television. It opened November 8, 1954

    Web Site Changes

    Almost Heaven Saunas is making some enhancements to our web site.  These changes have begun and will phase in over the coming weeks.  The changes will improve both the navigation and the information you can obtain on the site, and these improvements were the result of input we have received from our customers.

    You will notice that the photo galleries are now better organized, allowing you to see thumbnails of all the pictures in one screen.  You can then click on the image and see a blow-up of that particular picture.  We have now completed the Barrel Sauna page as well as the Silo Sauna page, and the changes will apply to all of our sauna models.

    Sauna Cardio Workout

    A sauna as a cardio workout?  Absolutely!  Cardio involves working the heart muscle, and anyone who has used a traditional sauna knows how aerobic the experience can be.  A traditional steam sauna (also called a wet sauna and a dry sauna) causes your heart to beat faster due to the high temperatures.  Many people compare the experience to an aggressive workout complete with endorphin release as the end result.

    Production Lead Times

    We are pleased to say that the popularity of Almost Heaven Saunas is greater than ever, and we are humbled by the trust people place in our products.  Due to the volume we are currently experiencing our production times are being stretched, and we ask for your patience.

    We are currently requiring a full six weeks to produce and ship sauna kit orders, and in some cases it is longer than that depending upon product options and shipping region.  We would ask that you work with your dealer or sales agent well in advance so that you can place your order and have it arrive in time for your home or garden project.  We are producing as fast as we can, but you will appreciate that we will not sacrifice quality under any circumstance! 

    Thank you again for your understanding, and we appreciate the value so many of you have placed in our sauna products!  We hope to be back to our standard three-four week lead time by end of summer.

    God Bless America!

    On this 4th of July weekend, we once again reflect upon and give thanks for the freedoms we enjoy in this country.  While we are excited to build and sell saunas throughout the world, everyone at Almost Heaven Saunas recognizes that our ability to conduct commerce and live free in this country came at a price that others before us were willing to pay.  We pass on the following for your information for you to reflect upon as you enjoy your holiday:

    THE PRICE THEY PAID – Author Unknown

    Have you ever wondered what happend to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence? 

    • Five signers were captured by the British as traitors and tortured before they died.
    • Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.
    • Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army.
    • One had two sons captured by the British.
    • Nine of the 56 fought and died from their wounds or from hardships faced during the Revolutionary War. 

    What kind of men were they?

    • Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists.
    • Eleven were merchants.
    • Nine were farmers and large plantation owners.
    • Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy.  He sold his home and properties to pay his debts and died in rags.
    • Thomas McKean was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly.  He served in Congress without pay and his family was kept in hiding.  His possessions were taken from him and poverty was his reward.
    • Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Ellery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnet, Heyward, Rutledge and Middleton.
    • At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr. noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters.  He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire.  The home was destroyed and Nelson died bankrupt.
    • Francis Lewis had his home and propertied destroyed.  The enemy jailed his wife and she died within a few months.
    • John Hart was driven from his wife’s bedside as she was dying.  Their 13 children fled for their lives.  His fields and gristmill were laid to waste.  For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.

    I think I have found my new favorite sauna installation!  Take a look at this beautiful setting with the Barrel Sauna placed below the decorative arbor.  The entire backyard of this Oregon installation is a garden setting with the Almost Heaven Sauna as the centerpiece!

    The dictionary defines a COOPER as “a person who makes or repairs casks, barrels, etc.”,  and the term COOPERAGE refers to “the work or business of a cooper.”  Almost Heaven Saunas manufactures traditional steam saunas in the cooperage tradition, which means our saunas are built similar to barrels or casks. We are proud coopers! Barrels are built from staves that are notched with a “croze,” that enables the two ends to fit within the stave.  Bands are placed around the barrel and tightened, drawing the staves to the ends in a tight seal free of fasteners.

    The cooperage process makes for a beautiful and seamless construction method, and one which Almost Heaven Saunas has been doing for over thirty years.  All of our saunas, including the Barrel SaunaModern Sauna and Silo Sauna are all built in the cooperage tradition.  Our experience and hand-crafted manufacture combine to make a sauna of superior cooperage that is unmatched by any others in the industry today.
