Sauna Venting

March 31st, 2010

As seasoned sauna bathers know, a sauna needs to have proper air flow when using the sauna.  This is both for the flow of fresh air into the sauna and to facilitate movement of the air within the sauna.

A properly vented sauna will have a vent below the heater on one end of the sauna, and then another vent high in the sauna on the opposite wall.  The rising heat will escape from the top vent and be replaced with fresh air that was drawn into the sauna from the lower vent.  The constant flow of air keeps fresh air coming in while allowing the heater to maintain the overall temperature of the room.

Almost Heaven Saunas further enhance the venting process by having an extra large vent on the top that can be adjusted to restrict the air movement to the user’s desire.  During heat-up, for example, the vent can be fully closed to allow the sauna to heat faster, and then opened when the sauna is being used.  Additionally, a louvered vent cover is placed on the lower vent preventing insects and rodents from entering the sauna if it is located outdoors.  The attention to construction quality and function extends to the smallest details in each Almost Heaven Sauna!

Saunas and the Health Care Bill

March 28th, 2010

If anyone has actually read the entire health care bill, we would be interested in knowing if the purchase of a sauna is covered.  If this thing is truly 2000 plus pages long, then I would hope there would be at least some indirect mention of the health benefits of saunas!  Weight loss, cardio conditioning, increased blood flow and more are all health benefits when using a traditional sauna.  Plus, when purchasing an Almost Heaven Sauna, you are helping a U.S. manufacturing company!  This double-dip benefit for personal health and the general economy should make the purchase of a Barrel SaunaModern Sauna or Silo Sauna a priority for every U.S. citizen!  Call us at 888-355-3050 to learn more about our exciting line-up of U.S. manufactured quality home saunas!

Super-Sized Saunas

March 25th, 2010

We often get requests for custom-built Almost Heaven Saunas.  These requests can take the shape of specially sized rooms and features, or simply modified versions of our current saunas.  Some of our current standard models were originally built as custom saunas, so we welcome the opportunity to try new things as it often leads to new product developments across the product line.  For example, our popular Canopy Barrel was originally built as a custom unit for an overseas customer and has since been made part of our standard offering.

We are currently producing another custom unit, and while it is too soon to say if this will become standard, it gives an idea of what we can do.  A customer saw our new Ellipse Sauna and placed an order for an extended version of this deluxe unit.  This super-size sauna is 12′ long, incorporating a canopy porch, changing room and sauna room.  The added height and width of the Ellipse provides the space to add a changing room, and this deluxe sauna will be installed at the customer’s in a few weeks.

While we don’t currently have pictures of the finished unit, we will post them as soon as we do.  Until then know that there is no sauna project to large or difficult for us to tackle!  We welcome the challenge of building a custom sauna, and in the process may use the design to expand our line in the future!

The Ellipse Is Hot!

March 17th, 2010

I guess this may be overstating the obvious if you’re reading it in the context of the actual sauna experience!  Of COURSE the Ellipse is hot… it is our biggest sauna ever and delivers a terrific, hot sauna bath!  However, what I mean in this case is the popularity of this new and exciting sauna!  Perhaps I should say, Ellipse Sauna SALES are Hot!  This latest offering in the AlmostHeavenSauna line-up is bigger and has more amenities than any of our sauna models.  It is deluxe to the max and is truly a work of art, and people are clearly loving it.  The contoured benches, duckboard flooring, spacious interior and hand-crafted red cedar workmanship make this the sauna to own!  Want more information on this exciting model?  Call me at 888.355.3050 and let’s talk!

Caring For Western Canadian Red Cedar

March 15th, 2010

With spring upon us, people are beginning to spruce up their backyards and get their outdoor living environments ready for the season.  Sauna owners also use this time to ready their sauna for the new year, and that includes the owners of Almost Heaven Saunas.  If you are the owner of an Almost Heaven Sauna, there are ways to freshen up your sauna so it looks brand new.  The western Canadian red cedar is resistent to the elements, and a simple pressure washing of the sauna will bring back the original color of the wood if it has been left to weather naturally.  Use a low pressure, wide-spray pattern to clean the dirt out of the wood.  When the wood drys you will again see the rich, original color of the wood!  At this point you can treat the wood with any outdoor stain or sealant, or you can let the sauna weather normally and again pressure wash it at a later date.  The naturally weather resistent red cedar gives you plenty of aesthetic options to suit your decorative tastes!

Sauna vs. Beach

March 11th, 2010

You may have read in our website that sauna use enhances the color 0f your skin.  Will it substitute for a  sun tan?  The answer is, no, it will not.  However, it is true that your skin will have more color to it when you use your sauna regularly, according to some users.  The high temperatures in a traditional sauna increase the circulation in your body by causing your heart to beat faster and pump more blood.  The expanding blood vessels and increased blood flow bring color to your skin, in the same way as a good workout.  When using my own sauna several times per week, I retain an added amount of color that has caused some people to ask if I have been tanning!  So, while using your sauna is not the same as going to the beach, it may be the next best thing, with health benefits as well!

Replacement Components

March 8th, 2010

Having over thirty years worth of Almost Heaven Saunas in the field, we get our share of requests for replacement components and parts.  We often sell accessories as after-market items, but we also sell entire sauna components for any of our sauna models.  For example, we just received a request from someone who needed two new end sections for a Barrel Sauna; apparently when transporting the disassembled sauna, the box containing the original ends was lost or damaged.  Another example is people who move their saunas, either to a different location at their home, or to a new home altogether.  We often sell replacement stave boards or wall sections to people who have damaged existing boards or simply wish to spruce up the look of the sauna.  On ocassion we have customers who break their glass doors or simply wish to switch to a wooden door.

Whatever the component and whatever the reason, Almost Heaven Saunas is happy to provide replacement parts for our saunas regardless of when they were purchased!  Call 888.355.3050 if you have questions regarding replacement parts!

New Bench Design

March 7th, 2010

Almost Heaven Saunas continually strives to improve our products whenever we can.  For example, while the general look of our Barrel Sauna remains the same after over thirty years on the market, slight improvements in design and components keeps the product current and fresh.  For example, we previously used steel hoops where we now use stainless bands; we previously used wood doors where we now use glass doors, etc.

We are pleased to announce that another important detail is being enhanced, and that is the design of our benches.  In addition to being fully assembled, our benches are now built with 2×2 red cedar material rather than 2×4 red cedar.  This provides a more comfortable feel when sitting, and also improves on the aesthetics of the bench design.  And, of course, we were able to make this change with no addition to the price of the sauna!  Almost Heaven Saunas, the authentic sauna experience!

The Sauna Bath

March 5th, 2010

I was recently asked about the “proper” way to use an Almost Heaven Sauna.  While there are various techniques used and recommended by sauna bathers throughout the world, there is no hard and fast rule.  Variables such as temperature, desired outcome and time available all play a role in how you use a sauna.  Some like their saunas extremely hot, while others like a lower temperature; some like the dry sauna experience, others like the steam filling the air.  And, of course, if you only have twenty minutes after a workout available for your sauna, a full one-hour regimine won’t work for you.

Some sauna purists may chastise me, but my routine is as follows.  I turn on the sauna when I head out for my workout, and an hour later it is up to 180F, which is my preferred temperature.  I sit in the dry sauna (no water on the rocks) for about 15 minutes.  Sometimes I’ll read a magazine, but most often I’ll close my eyes and just sit and enjoy the heat.  I’ll then step outside for a brief break (1-2 minutes) and then I’ll step back into the sauna and begin sprinkling water on the rocks.  The steam makes the sauna feel extra hot, and I’ll enjoy my wet sauna for another 10-15 minutes.  I spend a total of 25-30 minutes in my sauna, and then another 5 minutes afterwards cooling down before my shower.

For the rest of the day I feel cleansed, rejuvinated and relaxed, all at the same time!  A session in an Almost Heaven Sauna is definately a healthy addition to my lifestyle!

Infrared “Saunas”

March 1st, 2010

Ok, so you may be wondering why the ” ” qualification.  The truth is, infrared ”saunas” are not saunas at all.  I know I have mentioned this in the past, but the fact justifies repeating; infrared rooms are not saunas.  Saunas require high temperatures and the use of water to create steam, neither of which is applicable in the use of infrared rooms.  An infrared room may be effective for sore joints or muscles, but the overall effects of weight loss, calorie burn, detox, etc. are most effective in a genuine sauna.  And, of course, the best sauna on the market today is the Almost Heaven Sauna line with more than 30 years of history behind it.  Of course, if you desire an infrared room we have a terrific selection in our Solaris brand, which will give you all of the benefits of infrared in a high quality unit!  Call Almost Heaven Saunas at 888.355.3050 for more information!  In addition to the best Traditional Saunas built, we have the best infrared therapy rooms as well!
